The story of the estate. São Lourenço do Barrocal has been in the same family for more than 200 years, and it was José António Uva (who is eight generation of the same family) who had a vision to turn the family property into a farm retreat he could share with others. The passion and dedication behind José António’s dream, and what he has created, is incredibly inspiring.

The interiors. Perfectly simple and calming. The interior design was led by José António’s wife Ana’s design studio, AnahoryAlmeida (also responsible for the interiors of many of Lisbon’s finest restaurants) and it is a dream.

Hortelão, their outdoor restaurant. The most beautiful place to dine between Spring through Autumn, this slow-food, farm to fork restaurant is located next to the pool, right by the organic kitchen garden, and is the perfect place to enjoy a dinner under the stars.
Hillview Dairy
HILLVIEW DAIRY
CURRUMBIN VALLEY, QUEENSLAND • AIRBNB • SLEEPS 4 | 2 BEDROOM | 1 BATH
Tucked away in the lush Currumbin Valley, on the top of a small ridge line, just 20 mins from the glistening beaches of the Gold Coast, is the very rustic and charming Hillview Dairy. Built in 1887, this old dairy bales sat as part of this property which was once the first working dairy farm of many in the valley.
Simone Williams and her husband Bruce (who have owned the property for 17 years) made the decision to turn the old dairy, which had been sitting on their property for 120 years, into luxury accommodation. They pulled it apart, put all of the timber into a pile and put everything back together again. The result is something unbelievably special. Simone has an incredible design style and an amazing attention to detail. Every little touch has been so thoughtfully considered. There are two big bedrooms with lusciously comfortable beds, one bathroom (which is shared), a great little kitchen, open fire, a huge deck with outdoor dining table and outdoor fans, and a plunge pool. The lush green views over Mt Tallebudgera, and the Currumbin Creek and Valley landscape are spectacular. The magic of this place really has to be experienced to be believed. It’s very beautiful here.
Why I love it
There are so many reasons why I love it here. Simone, for one! She is such a kind, generous and vivacious host. Her dog Smudgee, also. And then the jungle bathroom too, of course. It is quite amazing bathing each morning looking out over the banana trees (that were planted by the original owners, the Boyd family) - so lush and green and delicious. I also love the plunge pool that Simone dreamt up by upturning a water tank and wrapping it with timber to look like a wine barrel, with its stunning views over Mt Tallebudgera, and the Currumbin Creek and Valley landscape - the perfect place for a soak.
Also, I love the fact that The Dairy is truly off the grid - meaning wifi and phone coverage is very limited (if it works at all), so it's a great place to really switch off.
About the owners
Simone is a dream. A total dream. Full of life and love and brimming with passion - she has a warm and bubbly personality and is humble and kind. Pre-Covid, Simone was an International Cabin Manager for Qantas (and had been for decades), but given there was not much flying happening (i.e. none) she was able to instead dedicate her time to finishing the Dairy. Not an interior designer by trade, Simone has such an impressive knack for interior styling. She has incorporated so many thoughtful and considered design touches - many of which come with a story - and not one that goes unnoticed to me. A creative wonderland, I call her.
