The story of the estate. São Lourenço do Barrocal has been in the same family for more than 200 years, and it was José António Uva (who is eight generation of the same family) who had a vision to turn the family property into a farm retreat he could share with others. The passion and dedication behind José António’s dream, and what he has created, is incredibly inspiring.

The interiors. Perfectly simple and calming. The interior design was led by José António’s wife Ana’s design studio, AnahoryAlmeida (also responsible for the interiors of many of Lisbon’s finest restaurants) and it is a dream.

Hortelão, their outdoor restaurant. The most beautiful place to dine between Spring through Autumn, this slow-food, farm to fork restaurant is located next to the pool, right by the organic kitchen garden, and is the perfect place to enjoy a dinner under the stars.
The Lake House
THE LAKE HOUSE
BYRON BAY, NEW SOUTH WALES • AIRBNB • SLEEPS 4 | 2 BEDROOM | 1 BATH
The Lake House is a charming little homemade cottage on a lake just outside of Byron Bay. Sitting pretty on a 10 acre permaculture farm in Skinners Shoot, this is the ultimate bohemian hideaway for travellers who are looking for something a little more unique and interesting. I love this beautiful place.
The Lake House is the perfect place to escape the bustle of Byron, but still only be 5mins from its best beaches and eating spots. Here, you can really relax. It is quiet, slow, lazy. The Lake House has a very peaceful, natural, off-grid feeling - a perfectly eclectic cottage (thanks to its super creative artist owner, Maggie). Have a swim in the spring fed lake, laze about on the deck reading a book in the sun, put on some records, or chill in the outdoor bath. At night, a chorus of frogs will entertain you while you watch the sky light up with the Milky Way and endless stars. It's very beautiful here.
Why I love it
I love the Lake House for its very special location, tucked away on a former pig farm in Skinners Shoot (just 5 mins from the centre of Byron Bay). I love that the Lake House has been built so lovingly by hand using only recyclable materials (and things that owner Maggie found on the side of the road - windows, wood etc). It is peaceful and serene. I love running an outdoor bath and sitting there with a glass of wine under the stars. I love putting on records and listening to the music with the doors all open, light streaming in, looking over the lake. Or doing a bit of yoga on the deck.
It's very beautiful here.
About the owner
The Lake House is the brainchild of local artist, musician and creative, Maggie Schreiber. Maggie is a constant source of inspiration to me. Incredibly humble, Maggie is full of style, wisdom, and grace. The Lake House is just an extension of her super creative mind and talents.
