The setting on the lake. Sitting on the edge of Lake Wakatipu, on nine acres of pristine land, Relais & Chateaux’s Matakauri Lodge offers mesmerising views over the lake and over the big three mountains - The Remarkables, Cecil and Walter Peak. The setting is extraordinary.
The Deluxe Suites. The largest option (unless you were to book out the 4-bedroom Owner’s Cottage), we love these suites for their unbelievable mountain outlook and the oversized bath in the bathroom that opens up on to the lake. It’s amazing.
The option to eat where you dine. Head chef Jonathan Rogers offers a daily-changing menu that focuses on local and seasonal produce, with everything being sourced from no more than two hours away. He has a tiny garden on site, but his focus is more on supporting local producers and farmers. You can choose where you dine - whether that be in the light-filled dining room (with its floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the lake), to the library with an open fireplace, or your own private room.
